The Faerie, a special and supernatural being or spirit, is an enchanting and
magical creature. Faeries are supposed to assume a human form, either
male or female, for good or evil, to meddle in the affairs of mankind.
Other creatures that are commonly related to faeries include
the following: elves, nymphs, sprites, dryads, nixies, pixies, sylphs.
Although they are all not directly related, they are beautiful creatures
and all unique in their own ways. Some faerie rings are called pixie rings
and consist of toadstools or a circle of mushrooms.
Because faeries are among the most popular mythological creatures of
all time, they have been celebrated throughout history in several forms
of fine arts. If one were to watch Disney's Fantasia, this fact
becomes even more obvious. And with the arrival of New Age culture, it appears as
though they have become even more noteworthy. When categorized by contemporaries, they are
typically placed in the fabulous creatures category with unicorns and dragons.

Fearie Folklore
Faeries are most likely found in forests, meadowlands, near streams and
brooks, caves, jungles, and parks. Signs that a faerie may be near include the
following: feeling as if someone is watching you when you see no one there, feeling
as if an insect is touching you when it appears that there isn't one there, a wonderful
fragrance, hushed giggling, distant glowing objects.
Faerie rings usually consist of mushrooms or rocks in a circle. Faerie rings are places
where faeries rejoice and dance in circles when no
one else is around. It is said that if a human steps into their circle, he or she will be forced
to dance with the faeries. It will only seem like minutes have passed by,
but in human years the enslavement has taken place for three to seven years.
A friend may be of help, however, if they reach in and pull the person
out without stepping into the circle.
Because faeries are so intelligent, they are one of the most powerful creatures
of their kind. In fact, they may even become wizards because they are so
Gifted. One of their most powerful and useful spells is Charm.
Related Definitions
Dryad - An alluring tree sprite that is only found in the most secluded
places such as oak trees. They are very shy and non-violent so they are
never more than a few feet away from their individual tree. Unless they
are surprised, dryads can disappear by stepping into a tree or dimension
door to their own tree. (Dimension door being a Gift or spell of the
Dryad.) Dryads are usually charming and speak their own toungue, as well
as elven, pixieish, and sprite. They also have a communication with nature
and plants.
Gray Elf (Faerie) - Intelligent elves that are the rarest and most
powerful of their kind. So intelligent, that those which have genius abilities
may even become wizards. They do not wish to associate with any other humanoids
so they choose to live in isolated medowlands. Gray elves have either silver
hair and amber eyes, or pale golden hair and violet eyes.
Nixie - Nixies are water sprites which inhabit lakes and they seldomly
venture onto land. They create dwellings of seaweed and they have giant
fish to guard their lair. They find delight in enslaving humans, and they
are known for generating the charm spell. Nixies are armed with long daggers
and darts called javelins. They are 25% magic resistant but fear all light.
Nymphs - A beautiful, ever-young creature that inhabits the lovliest
of all wilderness places including clear lakes, streams, and crystalline
caverns. They do not like any form of intrusion but there is a 100% that
a nymph will be friendly if approached by another good creature. Nymphs
are exceptionally intelligent and are very rarely found.
Pixie - A creature of great intellect and invisibility, a Pixie
is highly mischevious and prone to bother and fool other creatures. They
can become visible at will, change shapes at will, create illusions, and
easily confuse other creatures. They also have the Gift of ESP.
Sprite - Creatures that dwell in meadows and wooded glens. They
are very shy and reclusive, but they are haters of evil. Because of this,
they will attack only evil creatures unless they are attacked first. Their
weapons include small bows and daggers.
Slyphs - Beautiful creatures that are very similar to nymphs that
dwell in aerial places. They are mostly found floating about and it is
not likely that they will be found near the place in which they live. Sylphs
have exceptional intelligence and are very rarely found.

The Fairy Pendant
By W.B. Yeats
First Fairy: Afar from our lawn and our levee,
O sister of sorrowful gaze!
Where the roses in scarlet are heavy
And dream of the end of their days,
You move in another dominion
And hang o'er the historied stone:
Unpruned in your beautiful pinion
Who wander and whisper alone.
All: Come away while the moon's in the woodland,
We'll dance and then feast in a dairy.
Though youngest of all in our good band,
You are wasting away, little fairy.
Second Fairy: Ah! cruel ones, leave me alone now
While I murmur a little and ponder
The history here in the stone now;
Then away and away I will wander,
And measure the minds of the flowers,
And gaze on the meadow-mice wary,
And number their days and their hours--
All: You're wasting away, little fairy.
Second Fairy: O shining ones, lightly with song pass,
Ah! leave me, I pray you and beg.
My mother drew forth from the long grass
A piece of a nightingle's egg,
And cradled me here where are sung,
Of birds even, longings for aery
Wild wisdoms of spirit and tongue.
All: You're wasting away, little fairy.
First Fairy [turning away]:
Though the tenderest roses were round you,
The soul of this pitiless place
With pitiless magic has bound you--
Ah! woe for the loss of your face,
And the loss of your laugh with its lightness--
Ah! woe for your wings and your head--
Ah! woe for your eyes and their brightness--
Ah! woe for your slippers of red.
All: Come away while the moon's in the woodland,
We'll dance and then feast in a dairy.
Though youngest of all in our good band,
She's wasting away, little fairy.

Child
of Faerie, Child of Earth - A book for Ages 5-8. On Halloween, when
magic is in the air, a little girl encounters a fairy child who takes her
to his magical world and pleads with her to stay. Knowing she doesn't belong,
she refuses, convincing her fairy guide to return with her to her home
and travel for a time "over the human road." Yolen adds some sweet details
to a story with a familiar folktale ring, presenting all in pleasing poetry
that slips easily off the tongue for reading aloud.

Faerie
Tale - A book about Phil Hastings, who was a lucky man - he had money,
a growing reputation as a screenwriter, a happy, loving family with three
kids, and he'd just moved into the house of his dreams in rural of magic-and
about to be altered irrevocably by a magic more real than any he dared
imagine. For with the Magic came the Bad Thing, and the Faerie, and then
the cool. . .and the resurrection of a primordial war with a forgotten
people-a war that not only the Hastings but the whole human race could
lose.
Faerie Queene, The - A book about an epic poem that was published between
1590 and 1609 by Edmund Spenser. It is the central poem of the Elizabethan
period and is one of the great long poems in the English language. A celebration
of Protestant nationalism, it represents infidels and papists as villains,
King Arthur as the hero, and married chastity as its central value. The
form of The Faerie Queene fuses the medieval allegory with the Italian
romantic epic.
Last Unicorn, The - A five star movie
and must see. The story line truly deserves the A-list treatment, The Last Unicorn is memorable for its
attempts to stay faithful to its origins, the Peter Beagle novel of the same name. The
animation is vintage Rankin/Bass, and that's too bad; but there's an undeniable strength in
this tale and telling. A unicorn (Mia Farrow)--she believes herself the last--searches for any
others of her kind, while avoiding the malevolent Red Bull, the agent believed to have
destroyed the rest of the herd.
Legend

Legend - A movie based
on a fairy-tale world of dwarfs, unicorns, faeries, and demons. Cruise's character, helped
along by a magic sprite played by David Bennent (The Tin Drum), descends into hell to save
paradise. This movie is almost a classic case of art direction gone amok. The somewhat
amorphous Cruise doesn't lend much dramatic focus or artistic definition, but the drama
between Tim Curry's satanic majesty and Mia Sara's character, who becomes a sort of
princess of the netherworld, is pretty captivating.
Never Ending Story, The - A book
about a young man who steals a book called The Neverending Story and begins to read it.
The text he reads is printed in green, and that which narrates his own experiences
is red. Eventually the stories intertwine and Bastian enters the
book he's reading to save the land of Fantastica from destruction.
